The Centre for Future Work is excited to welcome Timoth de Atholia to the team in the role of Senior Researcher, and leader of the Centre’s climate transition project.
Timoth joins the Centre with over 10 years’ central banking experience at the RBA, where they worked on some of the Bank’s pioneering research into how climate change will impact Australia’s macroeconomy and financial stability. In close consultation with market-makers, they published analyses of how gas-export and renewable energy investment are reshaping our economy.
Alongside contributions to economic forecasting, Timoth remained a staunch advocate for the union movement at the RBA – frequently championing policies that would improve the lives of workers, and reverse the trend of wealth concentration that is eroding democratic institutions and entrenching fossil fuelled industries.
Timoth’s research with the Centre will be focusing on which emerging green industries are best placed to support Australia’s export competitiveness and provide good, long-term jobs for Australian workers. Alongside macroeconomic and labour market forecasting of future green commodity markets, Timoth will be identifying how skill gaps and infrastructure shortfalls can be addressed to help transition coal-exposed communities into the burgeoning green energy sector.
This research will leverage on-the ground insights from unions and their members, alongside consultation with policy makers and green technology leaders, to ensure regional communities – where workers are vulnerable to decarbonisation and climate impacts – have access to climate-resilient infrastructure and green-industry careers that support a decent quality of life.
